Artifacts: Claude Builds Things
I'm not exaggerating. I typed one sentence and Claude produced a fully working interactive budget tracker. With categories. A pie chart. Color coding. Input fields. A running total.
One sentence: "Build me a monthly budget tracker where I can input expenses by category and see a visual breakdown."
45 seconds later, I had something I could actually use. Not a description of one. Not code I'd need to figure out how to run. A working tool, right there in the chat.
This is Artifacts. And it's the Claude feature that makes most people's jaws drop.
What artifacts are
When you ask Claude for something substantial - a document, a chart, a tool, a diagram - it doesn't just dump text into the chat window. It creates a standalone interactive output in a panel next to your conversation.
Think of it as Claude building things, not just describing things.
Here's what Claude can build for you, right in the browser:
Documents and reports. Meeting notes, project plans, blog posts - formatted and ready to download or share. Not raw text in a chat bubble. An actual document.
Interactive tools. Calculators, trackers, dashboards, forms. With working buttons, input fields, and logic. The budget tracker I mentioned is a real example. So is a project timeline estimator. A client intake form. A savings goal calculator.
Charts and diagrams. Flowcharts, org charts, process maps, decision trees. Describe the relationships and Claude builds the visual. "Create a flowchart for our customer onboarding process: first they fill out the intake form, then they get assigned a rep, then we do a kickoff call, then we send the welcome packet."
Prototypes. Landing pages, email templates, simple app interfaces. Not production-ready - but perfect for showing someone "here's roughly what I'm thinking" instead of spending two hours in a design tool.
Data visualizations. Give Claude data and ask for a chart. Bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, scatter plots. Interactive ones where you can hover for details.
The prompts that produce the best artifacts
The magic is in being specific about what you want to see and interact with.
Vague (mediocre result): "Make me a project tracker."
Specific (great result): "Build a project tracker with these columns: task name, owner, status (not started / in progress / done), due date, and priority (high/medium/low). Add color coding for priority. Let me add new rows. Show a progress bar at the top for what percentage is complete."
Vague: "Make a chart of sales data."
Specific: "Create a bar chart comparing monthly revenue for Q1 (Jan: $45K, Feb: $52K, Mar: $61K) vs Q2 (Apr: $58K, May: $63K, Jun: $71K). Use blue for Q1 and green for Q2. Add data labels on each bar."
See the pattern? With artifacts, describe what you'd want to see if someone built it for you. The inputs, the layout, the interactivity, the data. Claude handles the engineering.
What to do with artifacts once they're built
Iterate. "Add a column for notes." "Change the color scheme to match our brand (navy and orange)." "Make the chart show percentages instead of raw numbers." Claude edits the existing artifact rather than starting over.
Download. Click the download button and save it as a file. HTML files can be opened in any browser. Documents can be saved and shared.
Share. You can publish an artifact with a link. Anyone can view it without a Claude account. They can even "remix" it - open it in their own Claude conversation and modify it. Useful for sharing templates or tools with your team.
Copy the code. If you want to embed a chart in a presentation or use a calculator on your website, you can copy the underlying code.
Five artifacts to build today
Don't just read this. Actually try these. Each one takes less than a minute.
- A meeting agenda template. "Build a meeting agenda template with sections for: attendees, objectives, discussion topics (with time allocations), action items, and next steps. Make it clean and professional."
- A decision matrix. "Create an interactive decision matrix where I can input options as rows and criteria as columns, score each 1-5, add weight to each criterion, and see a weighted total for each option."
- A process flowchart. Pick any process from your work. "Create a flowchart for [your process]. Include decision points where the path branches."
- A simple calculator. "Build a calculator for freelance project pricing. Inputs: estimated hours, hourly rate, complexity multiplier (1x, 1.5x, 2x), rush fee toggle. Show the total with a breakdown."
- A data visualization. Take any numbers you have - revenue, expenses, survey results, anything - and ask Claude to chart them. "Make a bar chart showing..."
The first time you build an artifact, you'll wonder why you ever used a separate tool for this stuff.
